Biography:
Derek Lauer is a dedicated architect with a diverse and highly developed set of skills with extensive experience in design, construction, 3D modeling and animation as well as project and team management. He has produced architectural drawings for over 2 million square feet of construction since 1993. Derek Lauer has experience in Healthcare, educational, commercial, judicial and residential building types and has worked with wood, concrete and steel structures.
After working his way up through the ranks of some of St. Louis' finest architectural firms, Derek established Lauer Architecture in 2004. Major projects include a campus of three twelve story condominiums at the Lake of the Ozarks, an indoor soccer Rec Plex, dozens of high-end custom homes, a Masterplan for a 450 acre development and a design competition for a Bus Rapid Transit system and fuel cell vehicle.
His most recent position with an architectural firm was that of Senior Designer at Holleran Duitsman Architects and was responsible for project management and team leadership on large complex projects. With Oculus, Inc. he was a project manager for a series of Oncology / Hematology suites and educational facilities for special needs children. Previously with Louis R. Saur & Associates, he was Project Architect on the St. Louis Planetarium renovation and a 480,000 sf concrete high rise in Clayton as well as gymnasium and academic computer center for a college campus. In New Hampshire in 1996, with C. N. Carley Associates, he was Project Architect on the New Hampshire Supreme Court Administration Building, the Franklin District Courthouse and Police Station. His internship was with Robert Boland Associates where he produced drawings for various medical and commercial building types from schematic design and presentations through construction documents,
Derek has also been an adjunct professor at the Washington University School of Architecture and at St. Louis Community College teaching computing and graphics as well as techniques in AutoCAD, 3-D Modeling, rendering, animation and Photoshop. He began teaching at Washington University within five years of graduating. He completed his Masters degree by doing advanced architectural studies in Barcelona, Spain. Previously he studied at the renown Berklee College of Music in Boston as a film scoring major emphasizing jazz, classical and contemporary composition there and at Washington University.
Additional areas of interest include landscaping, music performance and recording, travel, cooking, archery & outdoor sports.
