Octave Gone BEGAN AS A CONCEPT ABOUT TRYING TO CREATE A NEW WAY TO VISUALLY CONVEY MUSIC. EACH SIDE OF AN OCTAGON REPRESENTS A NOTE OF A SCALE AND EACH SUCCESSIVE RING REPRESENTS THE PASSAGE OF TIME. TONE AND TIMBRE ARE RELATED THROUGH COLOR, TEXTURE AND LIGHT. THE UNENDING LATTICE OF ADJACENT OCTAGONS IS THE HARMONY, AND THE REFLECTIONS SHOW REVERBERATION. THIS LABYRITH STRETCHES FAR BEYOND THE RANGE OF EXPRESSION OF A TRADITIONAL MUSIC STAFF.
THIS PROJECT IS JUST AS MUCH OF A MUSICAL EXPERIMENT IN TECHNOLOGY AND IMPROVISATION AS WELL. EXPLORING THE OVERLAY OF OCTAVES AND OVERTONES, THE GUITAR GENERATES THE BASS, ELECTRIC AND ACOUSTIC GUITARS SIMULTANEOUSLY. ALL OF THE COMPOSITIONS ARE RECORDED SPONTANEOUSLY AS IMPROVISED DUETS BETWEEN DEREK & EITHER ROB, MIKE OR PHIL.
